Dog Portraits: Juneau the Husky at Lake Jordan

Dog Portraits: Juneau the Husky at Lake Jordan

Juneau the Husky

At Jordan Lake, NC

Hey! Let me introduce you to Juneau the Husky and his owner, Sam.

We went to Lake Jordan for Juneau’s photo shoot, as he loves water! Normally we’d have a lot more beach to work with, but because of all the rain that we got in the weeks before the session, the lake was very full and most of the beach was flooded! Nevertheless, we managed to work with it and got some great images out of it.

Juneau loved playing with this little ball. So much, in fact, that I let him keep it!

Here he was jumping after his little yellow ball again. His owner, Sam, did a great job getting him comfortable with water, as Huskies are generally not known to be water dogs!

At the end of our session we went to a little grass area and with the setting sun I managed to get a few more wonderful photographs. Here you can see the gorgeous sunset light filter through the trees.

At the very end we did some silhouette shots by the lake… I personally love this image.

Well that was a small look into Juneau’s session! He was very well behaved for a husky ( 😉 ) and we all had a great time! Are you interested in a session of your own at Lake Jordan? Contact me today using the form below! Autumn is coming up fast, and I bet it will be gorgeous out there.

Dog Portraits: Rudy at Lake Crabtree

Dog Portraits: Rudy at Lake Crabtree

Rudy at Lake Crabtree

Dog Portraits in Raleigh, North Carolina

Come and meet this super cute American Bulldog Mix, Rudy!

We took Rudy to Crabtree Lake Park for his Dog Portraits, which, in hindsight, might not have been the best idea as it was a very hot day (high 80’s with a lot of humidity) and the mosquitoes were out to eat us when we were in the wooded part of the park. I think I came away with over 20 bites! That’ll teach me not to bring insect repellent 😉

Rudy is getting older and his mom told me that she would really love to have some dog portraits of him to remember him by. It’s always hard when pets get at that point in their life where they are starting to slow down. We had to take plenty of breaks during his session, as it was hot and humid and that tired all of us out.

Here’s Rudy, posing next to some flowers!

This was taken in the little wooded area next to the lake. I really love the bokeh in the background.

Sarah and Rudy have such a wonderful bond. I had a very hard time getting Rudy to look at me, because he was always so incredibly focused on his mom.

One of Sarah’s favorite things about Rudy was his pumpkin colored eyes.. so of course those needed to be captured in great detail. 😉

I hope you enjoyed some of the highlight images of Rudy’s photo shoot! Let me know what you think in the comments.

Dog Portraiture: Hope at Falls Lake, NC

Dog Portraiture: Hope at Falls Lake, NC

Hannah & Hope the Husky Shepherd Mix

Falls Lake, North Carolina

Come and meet Hope and her owner, Hannah!
Weather is always one of those factors that comes into play when planning sessions. I am always triple checking the weather patterns days before a scheduled shoot, and will communicate with my clients if there’s even a chance that we might have to reschedule. This however, was one of those odd cases were the forecast for Falls Lake was beautiful, the weather was beautiful when I left to the session location (approx an hour drive for me) but then when I was about 20 minutes away everything started turning dark.. very dark. And then it started raining and thundering! I pulled into the parking lot at Falls Lake and called Hannah immediately – but she was already there, just like I was. We ultimately decided that we’d just go ahead and try to get some images since we were both there and the rain was slowing down a little. Well, in the end it turned out to be a wonderful thing, as the temperature dropped from the high 80’s to mid/low 70’s, and the thunderstorm cleared most of the people out of the park… and the best thing? 5 minutes into our session the rain went away and we got some gorgeous skies. Score!

We explored the wooded area around the beach for a bit, but we got the best images at the beach. Hope had so much fun in the sand, can you tell? 🙂

Hannah and Hope.. How cute are they together??!

This is probably my favorite image of the session – the sky showed some color and I enhanced it in post production.

Hope has the most gorgeous, blue eyes. So of course those had to be captured!

So that’s a few of the highlights of Hannah & Hope’s session. I hope you enjoyed the images!  If you liked the images, leave a comment! It sure is appreciated!

Sphynx Photo Session: Mumriken & Mymble

Sphynx Photo Session: Mumriken & Mymble

Mumi & Mymble

Sphynx Portraiture

I want to introduce to you; Mumriken (Mumi) and Mymble, two gorgeous and adorable Sphynx cats. These two were such a pleasure to photograph! I had never met a Sphynx cat before this photo session, and boy did they win me over big time. They aren’t truly naked; they are covered in this velvety layer of down fur and are so soft to the touch.

Mumriken (Mumi) and Mymble are both named after two Swedish comic book characters Mumriken and Mymble from the Moomin book series by Tove Jansson isn’t that incredibly creative naming?

As with almost all cat portraiture sessions, the session was held in their own home, which comes with it’s own set of advantages and challenges. I lucked out however, as we had plenty of gorgeous spots to get some photographs taken. The thing about cat sessions is that you just sort of have to go with the flow and be a pawparratzi ( 😉 ) and follow your subjects around and capture them that way. The more you force cats to do what you want, the more cranky they will look in the final images; and we want happy kitty cats!

Mymble was 6 months old at the time of the session, and was a true supermodel; I had no trouble capturing her, and got plenty of gorgeous images of her. Her Brother, Mumi, was more like a typical cat in the way that he was a little hesitant of this weird person following him around everywhere with this big black thing in her hand! Eventually he relaxed enough around me, and I managed to get some gorgeous shots of him.

When I first arrived we had to get some logistics out of the way first (signing my contract, taking a look at the fine art product samples) and these two little rascals were ALL over my stuff, in my product bag, in my camera bag.. it was hilarious. Anyway… let’s get to the images!

Mymble being cute in front of the bookcase.

Now these two rascals were continuously running around and playing with each other. We initially had some plans to maybe take a picture of them in their bed, but that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon! Here’s a quick snap I got of them playing together.

Like I said… Mymble was a real supermodel 🙂

We went into the bedroom for some fun playtime, but Mumi wasn’t all that into it… Mymble was, though 😉

We tried closing the bedroom door and having some time alone with Mumriken, but he wasn’t very interested in playing… But, we got this shot out of it!

After we played around with the string for a bit, we went back to the living room to discuss what we would do next… and Mymble decided to be perfect and line up right in front of the window allowing me to get a silhouette! Like I mentioned earlier, cat photography is all about being ready at the right time and place, for whatever happens. Well, I got lucky! It’s rather hard to get good silhouettes of cats as the environment needs to be correct, and you can’t pose cats very well.

After all that Heather (Mumriken & Mymble’s mom!) asked me if I wanted to try some outdoor shots.. Well yes I sure did! Here’s Mumriken modeling in front of their beautiful steps.

After we went back indoors I wanted to try one or two more bedroom shots with Mumriken, but he still wasn’t having it… But then he lined up perfectly on the dresser and started washing himself… Score!! Look at this gorgeous image, which looks amazing in black and white.

Well, and that’s some of the highlights of their session! I have plenty more but we’ll keep it to this for now. What do you think of the Sphynx breed? I find them intriguing, and they are so playful and sweet! If you liked the images, leave a comment! It sure is appreciated!

Dog Photography: Rock & Ludo

Dog Photography: Rock & Ludo

Rock & Ludo

Lake Benson Park, Garner, North Carolina

Meet Rock and Ludo! Last May I had the pleasure of photographing these two adorable, super well behaved, brothers at Lake Benson park in Garner, NC. Their Mom, Kassondra, runs her own dog training business and well, it showed! Rock is a three year old Border collie and Ludo is a 7 year old White Shepherd/Yellow Lab mix.

A big (hidden) part of my job is to manage pets and their owners; I know a thing or two about dog training and both people and dog’s body language to make sure everyone is happy and comfortable during my sessions. I didn’t really need to tap into any of that expertise this session; Kassondra and her Husband Randy had everything under control, and I was merely there to take the photographs and pick the correct photography spots and poses. If you’re interested, head on over to Always Pawsitive’s Website to get more information. I highly recommend her and her training methods!

Okay enough talk, let’s get to the images!

Here we have Kassondra posing with Rock and Ludo; Don’t they just look like they adore their mom?!

We walked Rock past lake Benson’s shoreline a few times. His mom had to convince him to stay out of the water! Aren’t those spotted legs just the cutest thing?

One of the things I always ask my clients is which image, that’s on my website, they like the most. Kassondra’s answer was that she really liked the nature shots combined with the subjects. So I set out to get at least one image like that; and we got it! Rock and Ludo posed in front of Lake Benson. Because they’re so well trained, getting them in position was a piece of cake! Kassondra loved this image so much at her ordering consultation that she ordered a 16x24 Metal Print of it… with the question if I could make the sky more interesting. Well why, yes I can! This is the result.

Left is the image that Kassondra saw at her ordering consult. On the right is the final image, complete with a sky replacement.

On our way back to the car I saw a cute little pathway that just begged to be used for a few action shots! So we stopped and took a few pictures here. Rock and Ludo were so well trained, we didn’t even need a leash!

And that was the end of the session.. I hope you enjoyed the images! Don’t forget to head over to Always Pawsitive’s Website!

Equine Session: Phoebe & Xander the Haflinger

Equine Session: Phoebe & Xander the Haflinger

Equine Session: Phoebe & Xander the Haflinger

Back in May, I had the pleasure to meet and photograph Phoebe and Xander the Haflinger at the beautiful Buckhorn Farms in Holly Springs. I love equine photo shoots and this one was no exception, but what made it even better was that Xander was a total rock star during his session! I have a whole arsenal of tricks up my sleeve to get those pretty little ears perked, but I didn’t need a single one of them; Xander was a natural model and perked his ears at all the right moments. But enough talking, let’s get to the images!

This is a great example, I didn’t have to do a single thing to get him to look like this. Aren’t they the cutest together?!

One of the things Phoebe mentioned on her questionnaire was that she would like riding pictures; so that was the next step of the session, and again, Phoebe and Xander made my job very easy; She rode him very well and needed very little direction from me. Even though I was crouching down in the area (which can be a little scary to some horses, especially with my big camera!) Xander was great and he was so focused on Phoebe that he paid me no heed.

Would you look at how nicely she rode him?! Beautiful!

Now, one of the things Phoebe mentioned, was that she did not like the fence around the arena. Now I hear you say “Fence? What Fence?!” well, besides being great at handling animals and a camera, I am also a great photoshop wizard! ( 😉 ) so I made the fence go poof! Here’s a before (the image Phoebe saw during her ordering consultation) and a after (the final image), side by side.

While I was taking photographs, I was accompanied by the resident barn cat, who showed me her cavaletti skills! Look at that knee-action! 😀 After showing off her skills she kept me company while I resumed taking pictures.

After the riding was completed we removed Xander’s saddle and had some bareback fun; the connection between these two is apparent in this photograph! Xander looks so happy to be getting a hug from Phoebe. And again; I didn’t have to put in any effort to get his ears up.

After all that excitement Phoebe took care of Xander, fed him his dinner and then we took a few last shots while he was in the pasture. Because it was right around dusk the gnats were terribly active, but I think we can all agree this image made it all worth it.

And that was Phoebe and Xander the Haflinger’s Photo Session! A few weeks after this shoot they went on to win first place in a local dressage show; after seeing them during this session that doesn’t surprise me at all! Congratulations Phoebe!
